Earlier today I read a review of a book of Richard Avedon’s work and the reviewer put up a strong argument that photographers don’t need colour … that black and white is more dramatic and powerful … all the usual stuff … and he was quite convincing.

Then I came across this photograph while checking some old files that I took with something like a Nikon Coolpix or Olympus  … a first generation digital any way … and lack of quality, blur, camera movement, noise all create a rather magical, atmospheric,  photograph that is meaningless without colour.

Sometimes you just have to compromise.
