THE WEB: A RUMOR-MONGERS WET DREAM

When the world was young gossip and rumor-mongering were both regarded as peripheral activities of the mentally under-challenged. Now both have become respectable and elevated to the status of honorable professions by the proliferation of celebrity magazines, and the world wide web.

While most of these dubious publications tend to concentrate on the sex life, mammary size, and drug habits of society’s elite, a considerable number concentrate on niche markets such as photography. Specifically the activities of the camera manufacturers. Nikon, Canon, Sony, Leica, Olympus and Pentax (among others) have web sites devoted purely to rumors about forthcoming camera models, lenses and accessories right down to after-market camera cases.

While I find it a strange phenonomen,  nikonrumors.com attract huge numbers of visitors, ranking in the top 10,000 sites Internationally; 2,601 in the United States, according to Alexa. Nikonrumors is actually part of a triad, with Leicarumors and Photorumors making up the other two sites. It appears to be the work of one person.

I can think of nothing more mindless than combing the web for titbits, tall tales that are probably not true. But they are obviously successful and it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been wrong about what the public wants.
